Taekwondo classes typically focus on sparring, kicking and punching techniques, form (poomsae) and self-defence. Taekwondo is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness.
The 5 Rules of Taekwondo
There are five basic rules that all Taekwondo practitioners must follow:
- show respect to your instructors and fellow students;
- be on time and ready to train when class begins;
- focus your mind and body during training;
- control your techniques and use them only for self-defense; and
- never give up.
Taekwondo is unique among martial arts in its emphasis on kicks, which make up about 70% of all techniques used in sparring and self-defense. Taekwondo practitioners believe that kicks are more effective than punches because they allow you to keep your distance from an attacker and deliver more force. Taekwondo is also different from other martial arts in its use of a uniform, or dobok. The dobok is worn during training and competitions, and it consists of a jacket, pants, belt, and headgear. The color of the dobok depends on the Taekwondo practitioner's rank.
