Badminton is a racket sport played using rackets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Badminton can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). It is an Olympic sport with five events: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles, in which each pair consists of one man and one woman.

Badminton is also popular as a casual outdoor activity in Hong Kong and many other parts of the world. The game is played on a rectangular court measuring 13.4 by 6.1 metres (44 by 20 feet), divided into halves by a net measuring 1.55 metres (5 feet 1 inch) high at the centre. Players score points by striking the shuttlecock with their racket so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents' half of the court. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by either side. The sport can be played indoors or outdoors.

Badminton originated in India, where it was known as Poona. The game's origins are unclear, but it is likely that it developed from a children's game played with straw rackets and Shuttlecocks made of feathers. Badminton became popular in Britain during the Victorian era, when it was known as "the game of Badminton". The Badminton Association of England was founded in 1893, and the sport soon spread to other countries.

Badminton is now a popular sport in many parts of the world, with regional and international tournaments being held regularly. In Hong Kong, Badminton is especially popular among young people. The Hong Kong Badminton Association was founded in 1957, and the city has since hosted several major international tournaments.
